Customer Feedback Alert: Frequent "Unexpected Weight Jumps" on Balances in Winter

Recently, I have received feedback from customers across various regions, reporting that balance readings often rise unexpectedly and fluctuate unstably during weighing, which disrupts daily precision weighing needs. Some users noted that the weight of originally stable samples keeps climbing during winter weigh-ins, seriously affecting data accuracy.

Root Cause Analysis: Winter Dryness + Clothing Friction = Static Electricity Interference

Why do balance readings tend to be abnormal in winter? After in-depth investigation by our technical team, the root cause was identified as a winter-specific environmental factor: static electricity.

As winter arrives, temperatures drop in most parts of the country, and air humidity decreases significantly—especially in northern regions where heating systems are turned on, making indoor air even drier. At this time, daily clothing like sweaters and cotton coats easily rubs against the body or other objects, accumulating a large amount of static electricity.

When operators perform weighing tasks, static electricity on their hands or clothing will inevitably come into contact with the balance. The internal sensor of the balance is extremely sensitive to static electricity; static electricity will "secretly" interfere with the normal operation of the sensor, causing deviations in the weight signal transmitted by the sensor. Eventually, this is reflected in the weighing reading as the unexpected increase we see.

Simple Solution: Eliminate Static Interference Easily with a Damp Cloth

To address balance weighing issues caused by winter static electricity, our technical team has developed a simple and effective solution after multiple tests: wiping the balance with a damp cloth. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Wipe the balance pan

Use a damp cloth (wring it until it is semi-dry to ensure no dripping) to gently wipe the metal balance pan. Moisture can effectively conduct and discharge static electricity accumulated on the pan, eliminating static interference on weighing.

2. Wipe the acrylic cover

Static electricity not only adheres to the pan but may also remain on the surface of the balance’s acrylic wind shield. Therefore, after wiping the weighing pan, continue to wipe the inner and outer surfaces of the acrylic cover with a damp cloth to reduce static interference in the entire weighing environment.

Practical tests have confirmed that after wiping the balance according to the above method, the balance reading becomes stable and accurate again—effectively resolving the impact of winter static electricity on balance weighing precision. This method is easy to operate, requires no additional professional equipment, and has extremely low costs, making it ideal for promotion and application in daily use by most users.
